Robert Trahern was born about 1853 in Skullyville, Mushulatubbee district, Choctaw Nation, to James N. Trahern and Sarah Hall. Not much is known about him, according to oral history, he spent some time in jail in Fort Smith in 1891, but this has not been confirmed. Unlike his brother Lysander, there is no evidence that Robert was a member of the council within the Choctaw Nation. Robert married Cornelia about 1875.
Family oral tradition states Cornelia was a Gardner, but no evidence has been found to verify this. There was a Sarah Hall who married Jeremiah Gardner, and his household is next to William Hall on the Armstrong Rolls of 1831. It is not inconceivable that Robert would have married a cousin. Another clue may be the family household in the 1885 census; several individuals in the household may be relatives of Cornelia’s, as they were of no relation to Robert.

In the census of 1896, I found Robert Trahern with Margaret Trahern and Susan Daniels in his household in Skullyville. He has died by the time the census cards of 1899 are compiled for the Dawes Roll. Family history relates that Cornelia died on January 20, 1893, but it is unknown if this is true. She may have died after her youngest son’s birth in 1891. No records of the place of their burial are known at this time, they may lie in Trahern Station in unmarked graves.
