Jacob Pyburn first arrived in the Tensaw Settlement, in Spanish West Florida in 1784. By 1787 his widow, Frances Pyburn is shown. Nearly every neighbor, (from land records) of the Pyburn's is among the surnames with family member's massacred at Fort Mim's. Most have Creek connections. I can't prove the family is indeed part Creek, but it is a family rumor that we are indian, and it is undeniable that the family was among the American's who settled along the Tensaw River in Alabama.

Chapter One
History of Jacob Pyburn, Tensaw Settlement Pioneer

Origin of Surname: British or Saxon.
The PYBURN family traces their ancestral roots back to Anglo Saxon origin, and first appeared in ancient medieval records in Lancashire.

The Pyburn family is distinguished as being in the Alabama and Florida Panhandle the longest of all of our families, although documentation to confirm many of the early family members is difficult to locate if it exists at all.

The earliest documented member of our family is Jacob Pyburn born 1790-1800 in Alabama. He married Diadema Stapleton in Baldwin County, Alabama on October 13, 1819. Although a paper trail cannot be found linking him to the earlier Pyburn’s found in the area, census records indicate that he was in fact born in Alabama, which logically leaves the only assumption that he is related to these earlier settlers. Since the evidence of this theory is the strongest, it will be included here. An important factor that cannot be overlooked is that the rumor of Native American ancestry long held to be a factor in our family history is most likely from this family here.

Jacob Pyburn, born before 1757, most likely in Virginia, died 1786-1787 in the Tensaw Settlement of Alabama.
Prior to 1776 there existed only two lines of Pyburn’s in the United States, one, descendants of John Pyburn who died in Maryland, emigrated to southern Virginia in Lunenberg county, Virginia, and from there to Tennessee and North Carolina. The other, emigrated to NC from Europe, and moved onward to Oregon. It is highly probable we have connections to the Maryland Pyburn’s, as the namesakes of Jacob and Benjamin run strong in all of their family lines, discussion of these families will take place later.

The earliest Pyburn found in the Mississippi territory, which was under the Spanish government was a Jacob Pyburn located in the Tensaw settlement in January of 1785. 1784 records for Louisiana show a Jacob Porborn arriving in 1784. I suspect he emigrated from Lunenberg County, Virginia with his family, but since deeds from that area also include areas of Tennessee, it is unclear where he lived. We know his daughter in 1850 claimed to be born in Virginia.

The Tensaw settlement, just north of Mobile, Alabama, was the largest settlement settled by early American settlers, and it is known that many of these settlers intermarried with their Creek neighbors. The largest settlement, with known neighbors to these Pyburn’s was nearby Fort Mims . On August 13, 1813 a band of hostile Creek Indians massacred 250 to 400 settlers at Fort Mim’s and the surrounding areas. By the time that the military arrived, the bodies of the dead, decomposed and burned, where difficult to identify. For this reason, not all of the names of the victims, estimated at least to have been 247 settlers, where able to be identified.

Jacob Pyburn, born sometime before 1760 was a settler in the Tensaw settlement in 1785, at that time he had a wife, four children, and one female slave. In 1786, he is listed as an American on the census, but nothing further is documented. In 1787, Jacob has died, but his widow, Madame Pyburn, is listed as age 25. Curiously, a misspelling of her name, a Franco Paiban, female, age 33, {probably more accurate}, and is found in 1789. From this we can conclude that Jacob Pyburn and his wife Francis had four children.

The paper trail from 1785 until 1815 is scarce, but from what has been found we can conclude the following:

Jacob Pyburn born before 1760 and died 1786-1787 married a Francis who was born 1756-1765 and died sometime 1810-1815.

A Spanish land grant from 1798 for Michael Milton lists his land as bordering the widow Pyburn on the North, and Reuben Dyer on the south. In 1805 we find Francis, as Fannie Steel, with land in almost the exact same location as the widow Pyburn. The Archdiocese of Mobile has three Pyburn (often documented as Paiban in Spanish records) baptisms in the Tensaw settlement in 1788, they are Benito Benjamin, Mary, and an illegitimate child of Francis Pyburn named Isabelle.
Possibly remarried, Frances Pyburn, known as the widow Pyburn in 1797, may have became Frances Steel, a widow in 1805 with land in Tensaw.

Known Children of Jacob and Francis Pyburn are:

1.Jacob Pyburn born ca 1777, likely in Virginia, last known documentation of his existence is 1815, may have died in Santa Rosa County, Florida, or Covington County, Alabama.
A Spanish census of 1797 lists a Jacob Pyburn age 20, and his wife, age 18. Also mentioned in the American State papers, is Pyburn Creek as a reference mark, and land bordering the widow Pyburn, which seems to indicate Francis was still alive. I found a petition dated 1809 from the area signed by Jacob Pyburn transcribed online, also in 1812 a Jacob Pyburn signed as a witness to the will of Joseph Stiggins. Also, a Jacob Pyburn was enlisted in the war of 1812 to the Mississippi Territory Volunteers, this regiment consisting of people from the nearby Tensaw and Tombigee settlements. The next documentation is in 1815, a Jacob Pyburn signs another petition from the Tensaw district. As our Jacob was born ca 1797, which would mean he is under 21, it is unlikely that he signed this 1815 petition. Although he is in the area, Jacob never owned land in Baldwin County, so he appears on no tax lists. Most likely he does not appear, because he lived with his mother Frances, also seen as Fanny Steele. Apparently his wife died before 1810, and he had only one child, I believe he is the father of our Jacob, although the father could just as easily have been Benjamin. Possibly he is the second Jacob Pyburn listed in the 1840 census. I have an 1860 land grant for a Jacob Pyburn, in Covington County, but have not found out the type ( Military bounty or grant as a Creek Indian), and it is not included in the land patent database online for the land office.  I suspect his wife may have been a part Creek daughter of one of the Tensaw settlers.
2.Benito Benjamin Pyburn, born after 1777, may have been born in Tensaw Settlement. Died before 1820, likely in Escambia County, Florida. . In 1805, a Benjamin Pyburn testifies along with Reuben Dyer in land testimonies. We know he had land in Escambia County per information of other researcher’s, but I have not found out where this land was. Benjamin Pyburn purchased land in the area in 1806.  He appears only in the land documents and the testimony he made in 1805. He is not in the Spanish census of 1820 in Florida, so it is likely he died, or emigrated somewhere. No census records have located his whereabouts. He may be the father of Jacob Pyburn, since he named his son Benjamin Jacob. He was baptized in the Tensaw settlement 1789 as Benito Benjamin. I have not ruled out that Benjamin and Jacob are not one son named Benjamin Jacob Pyburn.
3.Mary Pyburn born after 1777, likely in the Tensaw settlement, though in 1850 she claim’s to have been born in Virginia. She along with her brother, Benjamin, and half sister Isabelle were baptized in 1789.
4.Phoebe Pyburn, born ca 1782, died after 1820, likely in Escambia County, Florida. Phebe (also seen as Parobi) Pyburn Turvin {or Tarvin, another prominent mixed Creek family}, who is allotted land through her husbands claim in Florida in 1831. Faibe Paiban is found in 1820 Pensacola Spanish censes, age 38, as a widow, living with Mary Pyburn Collins, age 33.

Child of Frances Pyburn is
Isabelle, born ca 1787-1788, died unknown. I have not been able to trace her at this time.

Phoebe Pyburn, daughter of Jacob Pyburn and Frances Pyburn

Listed as Phoebe Paiban, widow, in her sister’s household in 1820, Phoebe disappears except in references to her family in land documents. It is from a letter by a descendant of her son, provided by Judy Malhim, that I have finally been able to trace Phoebe’s descendants.

Genealogy ....Speculative...

Jacob Pyburn, born ca 1777, died Unknown.

Listed in the census of 1797 age 20, with wife age 18, he had no children in the census. He signed a petition in 1809 and 1815 with other residents of the Tensaw area, and enlisted in the Mississippi Volunteers during the war of 1812. Jacob also was a witness to the will of Joseph Stiggins in 1812. He is most likely the father of our Jacob Pyburn, and was possibly named Benjamin Jacob, or Jacob Benjamin Pyburn.

Benjamin Pyburn, born after 1777, died Unknown.

Benjamin testified in 1804 in land testimonies for claims of the Tensaw area. He bought land in 1806 around Pensacola, Florida. Nothing further is known of him. It is possible he and Jacob are one and the same person. He was baptized by the Catholic Church in the Tensaw settlement .

Chapter Three
Jacob Pyburn and Diadema Stapleton

We don’t know where Jacob lived, or whom his father was, though given his location in 1819, it is highly likely he is the son of Jacob, Benjamin, or Benjamin Jacob Pyburn of the Tensaw area. As his father never is listed as a tax holder, it seems most likely he lived with his paternal grandmother Frances Steel, who had a child in her household in 1810 in Baldwin County. Shortly after the massacre at Fort Mim’s, Jacob Pyburn, who is most likely his father, enlisted in the Mississippi Volunteer’s, and is last seen in records in 1815 when he signed a petition with other residents. From 1815 until the census of 1820, there is no indication of where Jacob lived, but on October 13, 1819 he married Diadema Stapleton in Baldwin County, Alabama. Not much is known of Diadema, but she was born in South Carolina. The census of 1820 shows Jacob Pyburn’s household as including himself, his wife Diadema, and one child, most likely their son, A.William Pyburn.
Sometime between 1820 and 1830, Jacob moves his family to Walton County, Florida Territory, in an area that is to become Santa Rosa County, Florida. From cemetery records of his son’s family, it looks like he lived near the state line, in an area that was known as Pine Level. An old cemetery, hidden by the woods, has burial stones for his daughter-in-law Dianna Snowden Pyburn, and his grandchildren. It is unclear if the remote location, or suspicion leads to several residents of this area being absent in one census or the other, but literally all of my families who resided in Santa Rosa, near Century and Pine Level have member’s missing in one census or another between 1850-1880. As Santa Rosa County is also a burned county, records prior to 1869 for marriages and probate, etc,  do not exist, making this and other families who resided in the area hard to trace.
An early record for Baldwin county does list Jacob Pyburn for a jury summons, although examination of this record has not been done.  The 1830 Census, Walton Co, Fl...p73...one male under 5, 2 males 5-10, one male 30-40 2 females under 5, 2 females 5-10, one female 20-30. Early legislation for Walton County shows Jacob Pyburn as well…

Sec. 4. Be it further enacted, That David Evans, Isaac M. Hunter, Neil McPherson Esq, Jacob Pyburn, and Richmond McDavid be, and they are hereby, appointed commissioners to select the most convenient situation in the settlement which shall be elected for the county site in said county, within sixty days after said election, whose decision of location shall be permanent; and so soon as the election of location for county site is made by the commissioners or a majority of them, the said commissioners or a majority of them, shall have power and authority to contract for the erection of a court house in said county: Provided, that the sum for the erection of the same, shall not exceed two hundred dollars.

The 1840 census Escambia County West of River Jacob Pyboum 2 males 10-15 one male 15-20, one male 40-50, 3 females under 5, 2 5-10, 3 10-15, one female 30-40

Another Jacob Pyburn   is in Walton County, .he lives next to Aaron Snowden...age 50-60, one male 10-15, 2 males 15-20, 2 females under 5, 3 females 5-10, 2 females 10-15, one female 10-15, and one female 30-40.
Is this the father of Jacob Pyburn? The neighbors are not the same so it isn't a duplicate of the census west of the River.

Santa Rosa voters list of 1842 and 1845 voters show his house was precinct 5, male voter’s include Jacob, and his sons Jacob and William. In 1850 Jacob and the bulk of his family, himself, his wife, his unmarried children, and son A.William, are not listed at all. His sons  Benjamin Jacob, and Archibald, are listed. Archibald is single, and his age is significantly younger than William, who is A.W. in 1860.

By 1860, Diadema is listed in the household of a family I cannot trace, with her are her two youngest daughter’s, Terry, and what appears to be Crucked, who is listed as idiotic. Fanny Pyburn, born age 25 in 1870 is living with Nicey, so it is likely Crucked should be Frances, and likely named after her paternal grandmother. The 1867 census for Florida in Santa Rosa County, lists no other Pyburn’s, and I haven’t located the census for Escambia County at his time. Diadema’s age in 1860 is about ten years younger than her age should be, since we know she was the mother of A. William Pyburn in 1820.

Descendants of A.W. and Dianna have often listed the name as Archibald, but given the age in 1860, it is more likely that A.W. is the father. Curiously, Dianna Snowden is the hardest of all the Pyburn’s to trace, her parents were granted a divorce in Alabama, but remained together, and in 1850 Dianna is listed in their household. I am nor clearly sure that the Snowden’s don’t also have connections to the Creeks, as one of their son’s married a Boone, with known Creek connections.

In 1880 I found a Jacob Pybrum born 1851 in Florida, son Archie in Comfort Texas, wife is Lovina C. Wilson, I believe this is the son of A.W. and Dianna Snowden.

My Aunt’s notes had some additional information on a Jacob Pyburn, whether it is our Jacob or his father is unclear. Military records of Alabama show Jacob Pyburn Private in Ledbetter’s company, Wellborn’s Alabama Mounted Volunteer’s for three months in 1837. Also in the same company was Jacob Ryals, quite likely another descendant of the Tensaw settlement, see appendix one. My Aunt has a notation that Archibald Ryals was Pyburn’s son’s friend. A Captain Jacob Pyburn was commissioned September 15, 1828 in the 46th regiment of the Alabama Militia. Archibald Rials married Ms. Elizabeth Green in Baldwin County in 1815. Land Warrant 16667 for Jacob Pyburn issued 7/26/1852 for Sec 21, Twn 5 Range 19, in Land Warrant locations Sparta-Elba book 506. Mary Jane Chitty (Mother of our Mary Jane), was issued 26958, sec 31, twn 2 range 10 9/28/1852.

It is unknown where Jacob and Diadema are buried, I would assume it is in an unmarked grave, as both my Aunt’s have searched most of the cemeteries of the area, and never located their graves.

Chapter Four
A. William Pyburn

William shows up only twice in records. He is named as a voter in 1842 and 1845 for Santa Rosa County, and then in 1860 in the census he is listed as A.W. Pyburn, I find his family listed in censuses after 1900, but not before, except for his son Jacob who I find in 1880. I suspect he died during the Civil War time frame, but have found no record of service, unlike for his brother’s Archibald and Benjamin. Several of his children died young, as testified by the tombstones of his family. His wife was Dianne or Dianna Snowden, daughter of Thomas and Tabitha Snowden. She is found in the 1850 census for Santa Rosa County as age 17.A.W. was born in 1820, in Baldwin County, Alabama, given the ages of his children, he died sometime between 1865-1870, most likely in Santa Rosa County, Florida. Diana Snowden Pyburn is buried at Coon Hill Cemetery, she is found only in the 1910 census after the 1860 census. From the 1910 census we know only two of her children are still alive, and that she had 8 children all together.

Children of A. PYBURN and DIANNE SNOWDEN are:
2.i.JACOB5 PYBURN, b. 1852, santa Rosa Co. Fl; d. Bef. 1900, Texas.

Chapter Six
Benjamin Jacob Pyburn
Benjamin Jacob Pyburn was born in Baldwin County, Alabama, and moved to Santa Rosa County as a child. He married Mary Jane Chitty, of Alabama, and is found in Santa Rosa County in 1850. By 1860 Benjamin and his family are in Conecuh County, Alabama, near Evergreen, where they lived until Benjamin died. The family graveyard still exists, its tombstones, mostly of wood, are in disrepair. Several of Mary Jane’s family is buried there. Whether they were moved, or the family just put up markers, there is also a tombstone for both in Jay, Florida at the Jay cemetery, near their children. Benjamin served in the Civil War for Alabama. Although he lived in the same location for several years, his land grant is not dated until later.

Notes for JOHN BENJAMIN BARNES:
Elizabeth is listed in 1870 census as Nicey E. age 19 in the household of her father. My Aunt's have her married to John Barnes, with the children listed, and nickname of "Millie", however, Elizabeth also had a sister named Millie, who married John Benjamin Barnes. A Barnes was married to Elizabeth, found in the 1900,  Millie married John B. Barnes, and died 1899. Ancestry.com gene pool lists two children by John Benjamin Barnes, by Millie. Another gedcom lists these as the children of Mary A. Barnes, another wife of John Barnes. I believe Mary was his third wife, after the death of Minnie..

Came across a gedcom, that has his mother as an Ingram, and his grandmother as a Chitty. Still need to confirm that. (His first wife, Millie Pyburn was the daughter of a Chitty, they are from Covington, anc Conecuh County, Alabama)
