Descendants of Unknown McCurdy

Generation No. 1

1.  UNKNOWN1 MCCURDY was born Abt. 1750, and died Unknown.

Notes for UNKNOWN MCCURDY:
Found a Henry in a muster roll of 1779 96 district

Theory only as to relationship of children.

Could Nancy McCurdy, wife of J. Bowen be his sister, or wife of William Henry McCurdy?

Anna is married a Sunday, Thomas brother to Barsheba. I believe this may be a niece or daughter  of  Elijah McCurdy.

Elizabeth Cobb in 1860 is probably a sister to Anna, and possibly daughter of William Henry.

Children of UNKNOWN MCCURDY are:
2.i.ELIJAH M.2 MCCURDY, b. 1793, south carolina; d. 1877, Century, FL.
3.ii.WILLIAM HENRY MCCURDY, b. Bet. 1786 - 1789; d. Bef. 1850.
4.iii.NANCY MCCURDY, b. 1800, SC; d. 05 Aug 1875, fl or TX.

ARCHIBALD MCCURDY, b. Abt. 1800, North Carolina; d. Aft. 1850, Dallas County, AL.

Notes for ARCHIBALD MCCURDY:
NOT A SIBLING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but coincedentally shows up in same area same time as William H., comes from Georgia....
Archibald starts land in 1826-1852
1837 in Sumter...Is he a cousin??????

Generation No. 2

2.  ELIJAH M.2 MCCURDY (UNKNOWN1) was born 1793 in south carolina, and died 1877 in Century, FL.  He married (1) MATHIE BOWEN Mar 1819 in Escambia County, Florida, daughter of UNKNOWN BOWEN.  She was born Abt. 1800, and died Unknown.  He married (2) BARBARA SUNDAY 18 Sep 1831 in Century, FL, daughter of JOHN SUNDAY and BARSHEBA COLLINS.  She was born Bet. 1804 - 1810 in Georgia, and died Unknown in Century, FL.

Notes for ELIJAH M. MCCURDY:
Per Pension record 1818, December 5th, Elijah was 26 years old {would have him born 1896 or 1897, not 1893}, and he was born in Chester in South Carolina. He was 5 feet 10 inches, had dark hair and blue eyes. Per WPA transcription of enlistment record, he was 21 when he enlisted, he was born in Abbeville, SC and enlisted either Nov. 22, or Dec. 6th.

Note ... This is not the Elijah McCurdy in Alabama, son of Elijah McCurdy. Possibly his cousin.

Had children with first wife, was still married when he married Barsheba who was 13 years old. He was Barsheba's legal guardian, and had gotten her pregnant, and so he changed her name when they were married to Sundike, and married in Pensacola. Some researchers have a marriage to Sarah "Barbary" Stevens also in Escambia, and three of the children by her, I believe this was again a way to avoid trouble over Basheba's age.

According to notes by my Aunt, they lived across the river and never had anything to do with the first family again. NOT TRUE.

Notes for BARBARA SUNDAY:
Name on marriage certificate different. Per my Aunt, this is due to the fact that Barsheba was Elijah's guardian and was underage. She was pregnant, and to avoid trouble, her last name is different on her marriage certificate. The same last name was used by her sister Charlotte in her marriage to Pink Owens, I believe Charlotte was also underage.Rumored to be part indian, most likely would be Creek or Cherokee. A researcher said she thought some Sunday's did make it up to Oklahoma, but I don't recall if any registered, and haven't researched it. Married under last name Sundike.

By the census of 1820 she would have bee 10-16, being born 1804-1810. John Had no daughters under 10 in 1820

Children are purely speculative, but as William and Elijah are the only male McCurdy's and the children aren't Elijah's this is reasonable assumption. LDS file lists John McCurdy of SC, with a William Henry and a Nancy same age. This John is brother to the Elijah, father of the other Elijah born 1798. Is this a lead?

OBITUARY:  GEORGE BILBO DIES OF HEART FAILURE

"Apparently in the best of health and with no premonition of approaching death, George W. Bilbo, brother of Theo G. Bilbo, was found dead in his bed at Ottie Page home early Tuesday morning when Mr. Page stepped into his room to summon him to breakfast after his failure to appear caused the family uneasiness.  Mr. Bilbo was about fifty years old and has been a resident of Pearl Rive County practically all his life."

"Mr. Bilbo returned from the funeral service of the late J. B. Newton and did not complain of any illness but sat up reading until 10 or 11 o'clock when he retired.  Death visited him sometime in the night it is thought and he died apparently without struggle."

"For a number of years Mr. Bilbo was interested in sawmill work and constructions over the southern part of Mississippi.  In that capacity he became well known among other leaders in the sawmill business, and some of his closest and most intimate friends are in the lumber and sawmill business today.  Several years ago he became affliliated with one of the largest insurance companies of the country and for past years has devoted his time and energy to that field."

"Mr. Bilbo is survived by one sister and *five brothers, but has no other immediate relatives.  He married a number of years ago but was later separated from his wife, who afterwards, it is understood, married again.  They had no children, it is stated."

    *  George was actually survived by six brothers.

Sarah Bowen was the daughter of J. Bowen and Nancy McCurdy. She born in Escambia County, Florida, and she married Neill Campbell sometime around 1825 in Santa Rosa County, Florida.
Recently I have learned of our connection with the famous gun fighter, John Wesley Hardin. Although I thought our connection to this man was only a family legion, I have learned from a William Cummin, who is writing a book about the his life that we are related to him through marriage. This was stated in William Cummin's letter: "John Wesley Hardin was married to Jane Bowen, the daughter of Neill Bowen. Neill Bowen the was brother of Sarah Bowen. John Wesley Hardin presence in th the Escambia County, Florida is a documented. In fact, Hardin was captured on a train in Pensacola, Florida which was heading for Pollard, Alabama, where Hardin was living. While living here he took the assumed name of James W. Swain and worked in the lumber business. While Hardin was on the run from the Texas Rangers, he actually lived with Neill Campbell and Sarah Bowen for a brief period. Of course not everyone in the South thought of Hardin as an outlaw. During his trial he claimed he never shot a man cold blood, but killed only in self-defence. Yet, his reputation grew to ovewhelming proportion. He was said to be very fast with the gun and he also managed to constantly ellude the government troops sent out to capture him, thanks to the help of his Southern friends. Hardin lived in Pollard, Alabama with his wife, Jane Bowen, and their three children before his capture in Pensacola, Florida.
According to Cummin. when John Wesley Hardin was arrested, Neill Campbell, or Neill's son, Neill Jr., was with him on the train, and a man named Shepard Hardy was there. This was the brother to Elizabeth Hardy, the wife of Edward Washington Campbell. They had went to Pensacola on lumber business, to work out a deal to cut timber on a man's property. Lumber was big business after the Civil War, since the south had to be rebuilt. Neill Campbell, John Wesley Hardin and Shepard Hardy were in Pensacola to buy more supplies and to do a little gambling at one of the local saloons. They also took some of the crew with them. A young man by the name Jim Mann was part of this crew and he lived near the Campbells. They were on board the train heading back to Pollard, Alabama, when the Texas Rangers entered the train secretly. A man Hardin had played cards with earlierthat day tried to trick Hardin, hoping to get him off the train to play another game of cards, but Hardin didn't take the bait. Perhaps he sensed something wasn't right. In either case, the Rangers attacked Hardin. He put up a fight and played ignorant to the reason for his arrest. A gun battle ensued. The young crew member, Jim Mann, was accidently killed by one of the Texas Rangers in the struggle to capture Hardin.
After his arrest, he sentence to nineteen years of hard labor in Huntville Prison in Alabama. While on the trains to take him to prison he had to sign his autographs and a lot of people came out to see him pass. He was a famous and celebraty. He studied law while in prison, and his wife died during his incarceration. After his release Hardin moved back to Texas, passed his bar exam and started a law practice. John Wesley Hardin wrote and published a book called " The Life of John Wesley Hardin," which tells of his life from his own point of view. He tells how he began his life as a gun fighter, plus his capture on the train and the men who was with him at the time. This is interesting reading for any one connected to the Campbell, Hardin and Bowen family.

18.  SARAH3 BOWEN (NANCY2 MCCURDY, UNKNOWN1) was born Abt. 1828 in Jay, Santa Rosa Co., and died Bef. 1860 in Jay, Santa Rosa Co..  She married NEIL CAMPBELL 1845.  He was born 30 May 1819 in Jay, Santa Rosa Co., and died 13 Apr 1897 in Jay, Santa Rosa Co..
Notes for NEIL CAMPBELL:
Neill Campbell was the only child to survive infancy of Charles Campbell and Nancy MacEachern. He was born on May 30, 1819 in what is now part of Santa Rosa County, Florida. His father died when he was only ten years old, and two years later his mother, Nancy, remarried. His stepfather was Elijah Gaylor from Beaufort, South Carolina who proceeded to take full control of his inheritance. As Neill Campbell (I819-1897) grew into adult, he waited and watched patiently as the events unfolded. He married Sarah Bowen, daughter of J. Bowens and Nancy McCurdy. The young couple lived at the same place with his mother and stepfather, and Sarah gave birth to five children before Neill moved into his own place. When old Elijah Gaylor died in 1853, without any heirs or doing anything about his administrator ship of the estate to bring everything to a close, the courts appointed an administrator for Elijah Gaylor. Neill Campbell who had grown in knowledge and understanding pounced of this administrator like a pack of wildcats. It was said that all Hell broke loose in Santa Rosa County. Neill gave the old administrator the devil when he tried to trick him out of his rightful inheritance. There was a change of venue from Santa Rosa County to Escambia County, because of the alleged popularity of Neill Campbell. The administrator said he couldn't get a fair trial on the matter. In the end, everything was decided in Neill Campbell's favor by the Florida Supreme Court, which upheld the lower court except in the matter of compound interest. Old Neill left all of his children well-fixed property wise.
At the Jay Cemetery in Jay, Florida, Santa Rosa County, there is small stone marker at Neill Campbell grave with the inscription of his service to the Confederate States Army listing him as a Sergeant in Company M of the 2nd Florida Infantry of Howell Guards under Captain Parkhill. He enlisted August 20, 1861, and resigned April 9, 1865.

Neill appears on the 1850 Federal Census for Santa Rosa County, Florida as a 30-year-old white male, occupation farmer born in Florida. His wife, Sarah Bowen, age 25 white female born in Florida. There were three children in the household at the time of the census in Florida.

JUDGE E. P. HOLLEY

Ely Pinkney Holley was born 4th of October 1838 some 3 miles east of Andalusia, Covington County, Ala., and when about 12 years of age moved to Andalusia where he lived until 1871. He then came to Florida and entered into sawmill business with his brother-in-law E. B. Riley, and continued in this business for about 12 years. In 1883 he moved to Milton, Fla., engaging in the mercantile business. He was appointed probate judge of Santa Rosa County, Fla., to fill an unexpired term of about three years caused by the death of Judge Ward, and for four terms of four years each he was chosen by popular vote to that office to that office, closing in January 1909, an administration of fourteen years as probate judge of this county. During the greater of time he was judge he was also mayor of Milton. In capacity of both probate judge and mayor, he always did what he believed was right and best. While he had great respect for healthy public sentiment for the opinions of his friends he had a high regard for his own opinions--as he was wont to express it: "What Holley thinks." Those proven guilty rarely escaped sentence when he was to decide from the evidence and his rulings were generally accepted as fair. Possibly the greatest objections ever mentioned against Judge Holley in the discharge of his official duties were his sentences; in but very few cases, if any, did he impose extreme penalties. He retired from public life, not seeking reelection, to happily spend his remaining days among his children and friends.

Early in life, during 1857, he was married to Miss. Sarah J. Riley, of Andalusia, Ala., and to them were born three daughters, Mrs. Neill Campbell Sr., of Jay, Fla., Mrs. R. T. McDavid of Hinson, Fla., and Mrs. D. M. Henderson of Pensacola, Fla.

Judge Holley was a member of the Baptist church and died embracing the faith of his church after a long and very consistent life. After an illness of several months, he died at the home of his daughter in Pensacola, Fla., about 9 p.m. Thursday September 18, 1913. His remains were brought by special train to Milton, Fla., on Saturday following and placed besides [sic] those of his wife in the presence of all his children, some of his children's children, and other relatives, very many citizens of Milton and surrounding country. As tokens of high esteem and respect, the business houses were closed during burial services, fellow ex-officials were pall-bearers, county and city officers attended in a body the last sad rights. The life of Judge Holley is worthy of emulation
