Henry and Margaret Boggs Franklin were the ancestors of the Franklins who
currently reside in Crenshaw County, Alabama. They were from Sumter
District, South Carolina and came to Clarke County, Alabama.
Records there establish his owning land in 1815 but the exact date of his
coming there is not known. The 1816 Territorial Census of Clarke County
has the household enumerated.

Early Marriage Records include marriages of some of their children.
No data has been found that establishes the parents of Henry or Margaret.
There is one fami ly story that has survived these more than 200 hundred years; It is an accoun t of Margaret Boggs' heroic trip from St. Augustine, Florida to Charleston, S outh Carolina.
To preserve this saga for future generations we submit the following account as related by descendants of Margaret Boggs Franklin.
Margaret Boggs' parents left South Carolina and came to the St. Augustine, Florida area. Their names, nor that of their children (with the exception of Margaret ) are not known. As a result of an Indian uprising, her parents were killed and possibly some of her siblings.
Those fortunate to survive fled the house and were unharmed. Margaret, the oldest surviving child, realized the baby was asleep at the time of the fracas; she went back to attempt a rescue. In the meantime the
Indians had found a bottle of whiskey in a trunk and were past knowing little of what was going on.
With calmness and skillful movements, she was able to retrieve the baby without her presence being known. Here were these Boggs children, possibly four, alone and no one to assume responsibility and care for
them. A neighbor came to their rescue and volunteered to get them back to South Carolina to their relatives even though he had no method of transporting them. Their return to South Carolina began on foot with
their neighbor vowing to. steal" a horse until each of them would be provided with a "mount". His promise was that upon returning to St. Augustine each of the horses would be released in the area where it had
been confiscated. So began this trip that has survived many generations. One night a horse was spotted at a feed trough, which was by-the owner's home. There was a problem- the horse was wearing a bell. The neighbor grasped the clapper, to prevent its making a sound, and lead the horse away. Eventually other horses were added and each of the Boggs children and their neighbor had a more convenient method of transportation.
One night as they journeyed on toward South Carolina, Margaret went down to a creek near their camp site and washed clothes. When the washing was completed the clothes were hung on the bushes nearby. Their horses were hobbled and optimism prevailed that come morning they would continue on the way home.
Come morning the horses were no where in sight. Very shortly an Indian appeared; they could only communicate by sign language. The Indian went through the movements Margaret had gone through when she had washed
the clothes, even to shaking them out before hanging them on the nearby bushes. This told them that he had been aware of the happenings the preceding night. He then made a tinkling sound and pointed in the direction or the horses. The horses were found and travel resumed.
Later in their trek, a white man came riding up rather hurriedly to their
camp site and reported that he had just shot an Indian near by. They should make immediate plans to break camp and proceed , as there might be other Indians. They took his advice and left promptly but did not see other Indians. Margaret always believed this was a friendly Indian and possibly the same one who had provided the location to the horses on that previous occasion.
At last, they were in Charleston, South Carolina, but no other information or stories remain to tell their story. Let us hope the neighbor kept his word and the horses were returned.
